Apple has been speculated to adopt the under-display camera technology for future iPhones, and a new report suggests it might happen in 2023. A new report says the tech giant would use a new component developed by Samsung Display to be used on the iPhone 15 Pro models next year.
The Cupertino, California-based company likely has six months left before unveiling the iPhone 14 series, but it is not surprising for the early details on iPhone 15 to emerge this early. The new information comes from The Elec, reporting that Samsung Display will supply Apple with an under-display solution to hide the iPhone 15 Pro Face ID sensor when it is not being used.
The publication says Samsung Display is working with Canada’s OTI Lumionics in developing the under-display camera tech. It reportedly uses cathode mask components designed to be transparent so that the light from the emission layer underneath and the light from outside can pass through.
It was also likened to how Samsung implemented the under-display selfie camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 last year. The 2021 foldable smartphone has less pixel density over the area of the front-facing sensor, so the camera cutout essentially disappears when the camera is not in use. It gives users a true full-screen view when watching videos or playing mobile games.
With the iPhone 15 series still more than a year away from launch, it remains to be seen if Apple decides to push through with the reported plan. As seen in other devices that are already using under-display cameras, the image quality is noticeably lower compared to the conventional selfie cameras on notches or hole-punch cutouts.
It is also worth noting that the under-display tech would be applied to the iPhone 15 Pro Face ID component. The same report mentioned that the 2023 iPhone would still have a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. Meanwhile, The Elec also said the Samsung Display’s new under-display technology would be used first on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which could be released a month or a few weeks ahead of the iPhone 15 series next year.
