‘Ready Player One’ released new behind-the-scenes photographs from the filming set in England. The photographs teased a bleak dystopian landscape filled with references from 1980s pop culture.
Photographs from the Birmingham filming set of Spielberg’s live-action film adaptation of Enrest Cline’s science-fiction and dystopian novel of the same name have recently been released.
The images posted on Comingsoon.net depicted a grungy, bleak, and dystopian landscape full of rusted vehicles and graffiti-laden walls. Filming is currently underway in England.
Spielberg’s film takes place in a dystopian future, specifically in the year 2044, wherein society is encountering an energy crisis. There is economic stagnation and people are experiencing widespread social problems. They are forced to take on idyllic virtual reality universe called OASIS for escape.
The film is set to star Tye Sheridan as the lead protagonist Wade Watts a.k.a. Parcival. Sheridan is best known for his role as Cyclops in the Marvel superhero film ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ directed by Brian Singer.
According to Collider, Wade attends school in OASIS and is a “gunter” - otherwise known as an egg hunter. He researches popular films, television, and video games from the 80s and the 90s for his hunt. OASIS creator James Halliday left clues towards an Easter Egg within the VR world that would grant its finder complete control of his fortune as well as the OASIS itself.
Cline’s book became a New York Times bestseller since its release in 2011. It also received positive reviews from critics.
More behind-the-scenes images posted on /Film showed numerous references from Spielberg’s past work in the 1980s including a wall covered in a gremlin artwork from the 1984 film ‘Gremlins’, and a poster of a shark possibly from the 1975 film ‘Jaws’.
‘Ready Player One’ is an upcoming action-adventure and science-fiction film scheduled to be released on March 30, 2018. It is directed by Steven Spielberg with a screenplay written by Ernest Cline, Zak Penn, and Eric Eason. It stars Tye Sheridan, Simon Pegg, Ben Mendelsohn, Hannah John-Kamen, Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller, and Mark Rylance.
It is produced by Amblin Entertainment, De Line Pictures, Warner Bros., Village Roadshow Pictures, and DreamWorks SKG. It is distributed by Warner Bros. in the United States.
