Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded the prestigious Order of Courage to Army General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff and commander of the war in Ukraine. The award, announced on Russia’s official legal acts website, praised Gerasimov for his “courage, bravery, and dedication” in fulfilling military duties.
Gerasimov, who turned 70 on the same day, is considered one of the most influential figures in the Russian military. Often referred to as the architect of Russia’s modern warfare strategy, he is also believed to hold one of the nuclear briefcases that can authorize a strike. His military career includes overseeing the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and directing Russia’s decisive intervention in Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad.
The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Gerasimov for alleged crimes in Ukraine, while the United States sanctioned him shortly after Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. In January 2023, Putin placed him in charge of the entire Ukraine campaign, reflecting his trusted status within the Kremlin.
Despite his high rank, Gerasimov, alongside then-Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, has faced sharp criticism from Russian military bloggers for setbacks in the early phase of the war. Analysts note that Russian forces suffered heavy losses and retreats, fueling anger among pro-war factions.
Gerasimov’s award highlights his continued importance within Putin’s inner circle at a time when the war in Ukraine shows no clear resolution. His role as one of the key figures in shaping Russia’s military strategy underscores both his influence and the international controversy surrounding him.
