There is only a week left before the final quarter of 2020 begins, and Sony still has plenty of details to unveil about the PlayStation 5. Fans should not take this as a sign of any delay, though as the company reiterates its plan to release its next-generation console before the year ends.
PlayStation 5 release date
A good sign that Sony is on track of launching PlayStation 5 in the holiday is the first commercial spot released last week. It did not contain any new information about the console such as its pricing or the specific release date, and that was a deliberate move. Gaming fans can expect more teasers and announcements in the coming weeks that will highlight different aspects of the console.
Sony Interactive Entertainment SVP and Head of Global Marketing Eric Lempel told GamesIndustry.biz, “This spot kicks off PlayStation 5 marketing efforts, and this is just the beginning.” Lempel took note of the incredibly unique situation that the world has this year that led them to try new ways to advertise the console sans the physical demo stations and in-person launch events.
While Sony seemingly has a clear plan on making PlayStation 5 an even more popular console, Lempel promised that its release date window has not changed. “We will launch this year -- that will happen,” he assured fans.
Since Sony confirmed the release of PlayStation 5 this year, the company has promised fans it will arrive in stores in the holiday season, which practically means November or December. Considering the launch dates of previous PlayStation generations, the specific release date would more likely fall sometime in November.
PlayStation 5 games
The first PlayStation 5 spot, as Lempel put it, focused on how it would feel like to use the next-gen console. So they chose to highlight certain features such as the haptic feedback, the adaptive dynamic triggers, and 3D audio. But Lempel also recognized that the list of games arrive to PlayStation 5 is equally important in marketing the hardware.
To this end, Lempel set the expectation bar quite high saying, “I would say that this is the best line-up that we've ever seen in the history of PlayStation.” It was previously reported that Sony had an aggressive approach in securing exclusivity deals for the PlayStation 5 that should manifest at the console’s launch and through the following years.
