LG Uplus and its partners are reportedly planning to launch a campus-based metaverse. The South Korean Mobile network operator company is teaming up with Gala Lab game developer and Megazone cloud operator for this virtual world project.
LG Uplus revealed the plans last week and said it will establish a specialized metaverse platform that can be used by all universities in Korea. The company is aiming for an early launch date next year.
As per The Korea Economic Daily, the company will be in charge of space planning and services that will be designed based on the characteristics of each campus. It will also take on the role of developing more corporate partnership models in the project.
On the other hand, Gala Lab will be working on the development of the metaverse and the platform, while Megazone will be taking control of the cloud infrastructure configuration and maintenance.
"We will contribute to enabling domestic universities to leap forward as future digital leaders through the university-specific metaverse platforms," LG Uplus’ head of the corporate division, Choi Taek Jin, said in a statement.
LG Uplus, Gala Lab, and Megazone have set out to sign the agreement to offer the metaverse service via the universities’ websites and not through a downloadable app. The platform will also feature various educational functions, including library consultations and online classes.
The companies will also customize the service according to each school’s needs. They will also pay extra attention to security so that access to the metaverse platform will only be exclusive to students and faculty members, Korea Joongang Daily reported.
“We aim to lead the change in the education environment to cater to the millennials and Generation Z, who are well acquainted with the digital environment and do not like to be bound by time or place,” LG Uplus added.
