While Donald Trump gave his speech at the 2019 Congressional Ball, some observers’ eyes were glued to elsewhere. Eagle-eyed fans can’t help but notice that something seems to be going on with Melania Trump, who stood beside her husband the entire time.
“First Lady’s presence was undeniably memorable,” wrote The Cut. But the publication was not interested in her impeccable fashion sense but her varied and seemingly inscrutable facial expressions as Donald Trump’s speech went on.
The Cut noted that Melania “nodded listlessly” to the crowd that it’s not clear if she actually heard what Donald Trump was talking about. At regular intervals, her lips would turn up as if “her smile was set to go off every so often.”
It’s also pretty hard to gauge what the First Lady’s exactly felt or was thinking at that moment. The publication also noted that in between those cheerful moments, Melania’s express would turn into a grimace where her brow would furrow slightly. There were even moments where her expressions seem to suggest that her true cognitive state is one of confusion.
UK-based Express also noticed Melania’s unusual antics that it even wrote an entire article about her “series of bizarre faces.” The publication also noted that the First Lady’s expression seems to be “switching between smiling and grimacing,” which led it to conclude that she wasn’t really listening to Donald Trump’s speech.
Netizens joined into the speculations as well. “I wonder what she’s thinking. Obviously not about this speech,” one user wrote on Twitter.
“She’s clearly in another world!” another one tweeted. “What’s happening to Melania’s face? Yikes!” Colleen Murphy Day had to ask.
Before he ended his speech, the President did not forget to thank his wife for organizing the 2019 Congressional Ball. “I want to congratulate Melania,” Donald Trump said. “She did such a beautiful job with the decoration. We’re very proud of this country, we’re very proud of this home.”
For those who want to know more about the enigmatic lady, the book “Free, Melania: The Unauthorised Biography,” which is written by CNN Correspondent Kate Bennett, is already available. “Melania Trump, almost three years in, remains something of a mystery,” Bennett wrote.
