Melania Trump and Anna Wintour had exchanged words over separate interviews before that suggested they are not exactly friends at this point. And when the fashion industry icon was recently asked about the current first lady, Wintour’s response was direct, full of praises, and sharp — it just was NOT about Melania at all.
The interesting way Anna Wintour avoided Melania Trump topic
The long-time Vogue editor was interviewed on The Economist Asks podcast recently and, unsurprisingly, the discussion led to the fashion choices of First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump. British journalist Anne McElvoy asked Wintour how she feels about Mrs. Trump apparently presenting herself as a fashion ambassador, especially for her fashion ensemble during the Trumps’ visit in the United Kingdom last month.
However, in what many reports now consider as a subtle “shade” to Mrs. Trump, Wintour answered the McElvoy’s question by entirely discussing Michelle Obama’s fashion contributions. “I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible. In every decision she made about fashion,” Wintour said.

The fashion figure explained that Obama’s legacy included the deliberate decision to support young American and international designers during her stay in the White House. Without even mentioning Mrs. Trump, Wintour seemingly made a stark comparison between the two first ladies saying, “She was the best ambassador that this country could possibly have in many ways way beyond fashion.”
When McElvoy pressed that Obama is no longer the first lady, as if to insist the fashion editor to comment on Mrs. Trump, Wintour had another very interesting response. The Metropolitan Museum of Art trustee closed the topic by adding that Obama is the one she admires.
First lady rep called Anna Wintour ‘small-minded’
Earlier this year, Wintour seemingly implied in a CNN interview that Mrs. Trump might not be invited to pose for a Vogue cover unlike other American first ladies before her. As a response, then-first lady spokesperson Stephanie Grisham said Wintour is “insecure and small-minded.”
It can be recalled that Wintour did have a good relationship with Obama. In 2014, the former first lady and author of “Becoming” personally attended the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Center named after the fashion icon.
The Trumps and Wintour are not exactly strangers to one another. The President and First Lady once attended the Met Gala together when they were still dating. Mrs. Trump was also on the cover of the American Vogue in February 2005 to feature the Trumps’ wedding.
