Macy's unveils an ambitious expansion, planning four small-format stores in the Northeast and Western U.S. regions. This includes upcoming Highland, Boston, Las Vegas, and Santee Trolley Square, San Diego stores.
In a significant move scheduled for November this year, Macy's will also open another small-format store in Santee Trolley Square, San Diego, California. These stores will span an area of 30,000 to 50,000 square feet. They will be situated in off-mall shopping centers, providing customers access to Macy's fashion offerings, on-trend beauty products, luxury fragrances, and more.
Enhancing the shopping experience, Macy's smaller stores will feature elevated fitting rooms with spacious layouts, lounge areas, full-length mirrors, and even designated selfie spots.
Moreover, customers will have access to the same services and benefits as those offered in the full-line Macy's stores, including the convenience of the "At Your Service" desk, catering to various customer needs such as payments, returns, exchanges, and more.
To meet shoppers' evolving demands, these small-format stores will also offer options like "Buy Online Pickup In-store" and convenient curbside pickups for items available on Macy's website.
The small format locations will also collaborate on pop-up shops and events to connect with local businesses and resonate with customer preferences. This collaborative approach aims to create unique experiences while optimizing Macy's physical store footprint and fostering closer connections with existing and potential customers, ultimately encouraging more frequent visits.
Since its launch in 2020, Macy's small-format stores have been well-received by consumers, with the initial store in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Southlake setting the stage for this new retail format. As of the end of 2022, Macy's operated eight small-format stores under this concept.
Discussing the expansion, Macy's Chief Store Officer Marc Mastronardi expressed excitement about the success of their small-format stores and the ongoing geographic growth, especially as the expansion reaches the Northeast and Western regions.
Recognized as a crucial growth opportunity for Macy's, these smaller stores aim to create a curated shopping experience that celebrates discovery and convenience. This strategic approach also optimizes Macy's physical presence while enabling the retailer to connect with existing and potential customers, fostering increased customer engagement.
As Macy's reported its second-quarter fiscal year 2023 results, the company witnessed a decline in net sales by 8% to $5 billion, primarily attributed to an 8% decrease in brick-and-mortar sales and a 10% fall in digital sales. Additionally, in the same quarter, Macy's comparable store sales dropped by 9.2% on an owned basis.
In summary, Macy's expansion into small-format store locations marks a significant milestone in its growth strategy, leveraging curated experiences to serve customers across regions better while adapting to the evolving retail landscape.
