‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ season 12’s episode 1, titled “The Gang Turns Black,” is set to feature a musical number as well as body-switching antics.
The synopsis for “The Gang Turns Black” posted on TV Guide reads, “In the 12th season premiere, the gang turns black after an electric blanket shorts out, so they engage in body switching antics they've seen the movies to change themselves back.”
It seems that highly amoral friends Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Mac (Rob McElhenney), and Charlie (Charlie Day) will return with a musical episode. While watching ‘The Wiz’, an electric heating blanket shorts out and they realize that they have switched races.
In addition to a song-and-dance number, the group will have to resort to the classic movie body-switching move in order to turn themselves back to normal, according to Uproxx.
The promo for episode 1 released by FXX featured the gang as they see themselves as reflected in a mirror. Although Dee looks the same, Dennis is fat, Mac is muscular, Charlie is a child, while Frank (Danny DeVito) is tall. Each character’s doppelganger is played by another actor of color.
Day teased during a previous interview that the first episode will be “topic-ly touchy” but declined on giving away more details. He added, “There’s songs throughout the whole episode. They’re speaking as well… The music is all original songs. I wrote some really strange music and I hope people enjoy it.”
He added, “We’ve got some UFC fighters… Again, the big one is Mr. Scott Bakula playing himself. He’s in the musical episode and I can say he will sing and he’s the best singer of us all and he really nails his songs and so I cannot wait for people to hear his song.”
‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ season 12’s episode 1, titled “The Gang Turns Black,” is scheduled to air on FXX on January 4, 2017. It was directed by Matt Shakman and written by Charlie Day, Glen Howerton, and Rob McElhenney. It will be followed by episode 2, titled "The Gang Goes to a Water Park," scheduled for January 18.
