Israel's military initiated "limited, localized, and targeted ground raids" against Hezbollah targets early Tuesday. The military stated that these raids were based on precise intelligence and focused on villages in southern Lebanon, which posed an immediate threat to northern Israeli communities. The ground operations were supported by air and artillery strikes, contributing to significant bombardment in the border areas.
Border Tensions Intensify
Residents in the Lebanese towns of Aita al-Shaab and Rmeish reported heavy shelling, helicopters, and drones overhead, with flares lighting up the sky. This escalation follows a statement from Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who hinted at an imminent military operation aimed at stabilizing the northern border and repatriating Israelis who fled due to Hezbollah rocket fire over the past year.
Strikes Against Palestinian Militants in Lebanon
An Israeli strike targeted Mounir Maqdah, the commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the military wing of the Palestinian Fatah movement, in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon. The strike, which marked the first attack on the camp since the renewed cross-border hostilities began, hit a building in the camp, Lebanon's largest Palestinian camp. Maqdah's fate remains unknown.
Conflict Extends to Syria
The conflict also extended to Syria, where Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed three civilians and injured nine others in Damascus, according to Syrian state media. Israel has a history of targeting Iran-linked positions in Syria and has intensified its raids since Hamas’s Oct. 7 assault on Israel.
Heavy Casualties and Displacement
Hezbollah has retaliated with rocket attacks targeting Israeli territory. Over the past 24 hours, at least 95 people have been killed and 172 injured across Lebanon due to Israeli strikes, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The conflict has also caused extensive displacement within Lebanon.
Calls for Ceasefire Amid Escalating Violence
Amidst the violence, U.S. President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire, urging an immediate halt to hostilities. However, Israel rejected a proposal by the U.S. and France for a 21-day truce along the Lebanon border, which would have allowed for a diplomatic settlement and the return of displaced civilians. The White House and State Department have not commented on the ground operations.
