Republican U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks secured her party’s nomination in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, setting up a closely watched rematch against Democrat Christina Bohannan in the 2026 midterm elections.
Miller-Meeks, a 70-year-old physician and three-term Republican congresswoman, defeated MAGA-backed challenger David Pautsch in the Republican primary, according to media projections. On the Democratic side, Bohannan, a University of Iowa law professor and former state representative, won her primary contest against Travis Terrell to earn the nomination.
The upcoming race is expected to be one of the most competitive congressional contests in the country. Political analysts have labeled Iowa’s 1st Congressional District as a toss-up, highlighting the district’s importance in the battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Miller-Meeks enters the general election facing significant political challenges. Rising consumer prices, including higher gasoline costs, and growing public dissatisfaction over the conflict involving Iran have reportedly contributed to declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump. These issues could create additional hurdles for vulnerable Republican candidates in key swing districts.
Bohannan is making her third attempt to unseat Miller-Meeks after two narrow defeats. In the 2024 election, she lost by approximately 800 votes, demonstrating the district’s highly competitive nature. Her campaign for 2026 is centered on economic affordability, expanding access to healthcare, and reversing Medicaid reductions linked to Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Fundraising is expected to play a major role in the race. According to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission, both candidates have accumulated more than $4 million in campaign funds, giving each side substantial resources heading into the November election campaign.
With a competitive political landscape, strong fundraising totals, and contrasting policy agendas, the Miller-Meeks versus Bohannan showdown is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched congressional races of the 2026 election cycle. Voters in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District will once again play a key role in determining the balance of power in Washington.
