Remakes or reboots have been quite the trend in the pop culture scene for the past couple of years. So it was not so surprising when Disney announced they want to revisit one of its most popular franchises by releasing “High School Musical 4” movie and “High School Musical: The Musical” series.

Both projects were announced years ago but the TV series seemingly have more progress than “High School Musical 4.” Earlier this month, Disney revealed the entire cast of the “High School Musical: The Musical” series on social media. Unfortunately, the response on Twitter was underwhelming.
Disney fans who declare their love for the original “High School Musical” trilogy, in general, replied to the tweet saying they are not excited about the project. One fan implied that the remake could “ruin” the classic trilogy while others say “High School Musical 4” is not necessary because the original movies are already a complete package.

The comments thread of the social media post were filled with memes, some even feature Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), that express disagreement. There are also several fans who fear that “High School Musical” movie and series remakes will end up like the live-action “Kim Possible,” which some fans apparently did not enjoy.
However, it is also important to note that the “High School Musical: The Musical” series is not a direct sequel to the trilogy. The TV series, which will likely be exclusive on Disney+ and Disney Channel, will still focus on East High students preparing for their HSM production. But this new group of teenagers has their own stories (and drama) to tell.
On the other hand, “High School Musical 4” — the direct sequel to the trilogy — was also announced in 2016 but there were very few updates about its production. After fans on social media have aired their concerns, will Disney take a step back and not proceed with the movie project? It is still hard to tell. But Disney is obviously targeting an entirely new fanbase for the upcoming TV movie since none of the original cast members are coming back.
