Hamas announced it is reviewing a new ceasefire proposal presented by mediators Egypt and Qatar, which U.S. President Donald Trump has labeled the "final" offer. The plan calls for a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Trump stated that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions and that negotiations during the truce could lead to a permanent end to the war.
Hamas emphasized that any agreement must include a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his hardline stance, declaring that Hamas would be eliminated and rejecting any return to "Hamastan."
The statements reflect longstanding positions from both sides, raising doubts about the possibility of compromise. Still, some residents of Gaza expressed cautious optimism, hoping the ceasefire could save lives. However, skepticism remains over whether U.S. pressure will yield a lasting peace.
Adding to the tension, recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and a brief ceasefire during the Israel-Iran air war have increased pressure on Hamas, which is backed by Iran. Israeli officials believe the weakening of Iran may open new regional diplomatic opportunities.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said there are "positive signs" and hopes to begin proximity talks soon. Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid pledged to support a ceasefire deal, potentially stabilizing Netanyahu’s coalition.
The U.S.-backed proposal involves releasing half of the remaining 50 hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, with the war ending once the final hostages are freed. Hamas has not formally responded, seeking further clarification.
Gaza health authorities reported 139 Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours. Among the dead were the director of the Indonesian Hospital, his wife, and children. The conflict has killed over 57,000 Palestinians since October 2023.
