“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 will be full of heartbreaks and consequences following a string of bad decisions from several of its main characters. With the previous installment billed as the “Season of Love,” some have been asking what showrunner Krista Vernoff is planning with regards to the next entry’s theme.
So far, however, it appears that no substantial development has been made on this front since the writers are still figuring what avenues to take. Speaking with THR, Vernoff said that it’s still early to propose a theme for “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16.
“That is a later conversation. We got through this season, and then the writers went away. I'm really proud of the work we did this season, but I don't have answers for next season,” Vernoff said. As for the consequences mentioned earlier, Vernoff said that “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 will put heavy emphasis on this front to drive home the impact of Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) blunder.
Although Mer’s heart is in the right place, she still committed fraud that resulted in DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) landing in jail after covering for her. Adding more complication is the fact that Mer finally confessed her love for her colleague, which may be hinting that the theme for “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 will revolve around healing and rebuilding.
After all, love is a tremendous motivator to spur an individual to correct a huge mistake. Which brings us to the possibility of a political plotline in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16, the very factor that forced Meredith to commit the egregious mistake.
When Vernoff was asked by THR if she has considered a political story for the medical drama, she said they didn’t intend to do that. Instead, Mer’s decision and DeLuca’s incarceration stems from the fact that the showrunners want Meredith to pay for her actions. For years, the character has been quite the rule breaker and her behavior has finally caught up to her. With quite the juicy plotline setup for “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16, it’s understandable that a lot of people are excited about the series’ return. And speaking of which, the show will likely return in September seeing the previous pattern employed by ABC.
