“Game Of Thrones” Season 7 Update: “Sherlock” Star Mark Gatiss Confirms Return As Tycho Nestoris; What Could Be The Iron Bank’s Role In The Upcoming War For The Iron Throne?

A familiar TV face will return to “Game Of Thrones.”

Mark Gatiss, the other half of the creative writer duo and star of BBC’s “Sherlock,” confirmed that he is returning to the HBO fantasy drama to reprise his role as Tycho Nestoris, an agent of the Iron Bank, a powerful financial institution located in Braavos. Speaking to press at the BFI & Radio Times Festival, his comments made it appear that the Iron Bank at least, will play a part in the brewing war at Westeros.

“Yes, I did it in Belfast last year. I can’t tell you anything more obviously, mostly because I don’t know anything. I’ve done four episodes now and there’s two more they think. It’s a huge saga and I don’t know and I rather like that. But I’ve had a lovely time. The last scene I’m in with – I probably can’t say because it would be a spoiler, wouldn’t it?,” he said, just falling short of revealing any more details.

However, his past appearances on “Game of Thrones” might have given the significance of his role away, at least for Season 7. Tycho first appeared in Season 4, when he lent Stannis Baratheon money to fund his campaign in “The Laws of Gods and Men” episode. He also failed to fall on Mace Tyrell’s charm when the latter attempted to bribe him in “The Dance of Dragons” episode in Season 5.

Hillary Busis for Vanity Fair posits, “More Tycho means that the Iron Bank of Braavos, an inordinately powerful financial institution, will likely play a greater role in the show’s final seasons, probably as the various factions dueling for control of Westeros—Cersei, Daenerys, Ellaria Sand, Ser Pounce?!—seek funding via its vast reserves. We know, too, that the Lannisters have long been in debt to the Iron Bank, especially now that their ancestral gold mines have run dry—and it may be time for Tycho and co. to collect on Cersei.”

“Game of Thrones” will return on HBO for Season 7 on Sunday, July 16.
