A new web domain name was just released by “Unregistery” to the general public, which is meant specifically for game companies and gamers. The domain is .game and gaming behemoths are already buying up the prime real estate including “Microsoft” and “Blizzard Entertainment.”
Major video game titles often already have official websites such as “Naughty Dog’s” hit series “Uncharted,” which can be found at www.unchartedthegame.com. However, sub-specific web domain names are popular regardless because how closely they are tied to the genre that the site covers.
As such, it’s no wonder that companies like “Blizzard Entertainment” already have .game domains for their biggest sellers according to Polygon; namely, “Warcraft” and “Starcraft,” just to name two. Companies like “Naughty Dog” have decided to sit out of the trend however, since domain names like Uncharted.game are still available as of writing this article for $318.88 a year.
“Unregistry” managed to beat Google as well as Amazon in acquiring the rights for hosting the .game name. Registration proper for the domain names started in May 24, though early access was already available the week before.
The company released a press release about the new domain names, with “Unregistry” founder and managing director Frank Schilling seeming particularly giddy when major gaming companies were quick to buy out .game domain names for their respective titles.
"We're excited to bring .game to the internet, and we are especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world's leading gaming companies," he said. "The broad-based support of .game by the companies that make the world's most exciting and immersive form of entertainment is deeply gratifying."
There are still a ton of .game names available that have not been acquired though, and the domain names are actually offered to anyone who can buy them first. Even companies that are not known for their involvement in gaming such as Apple are buying up .game domain names.
