Intense fighting has erupted in the war-torn city of Pokrovsk, eastern Ukraine, where Russian and Ukrainian forces are locked in brutal urban combat. The city, a vital transport and logistics hub, has become a major battleground as Moscow pushes to seize control after more than a year of relentless assaults.
Ukraine’s military reported heavy clashes across Pokrovsk, emphasizing the city’s importance for Kyiv’s frontline operations. Special forces units have been deployed to reinforce defences, and additional weapons and equipment have been rushed in to bolster Ukrainian positions. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited troops near Pokrovsk and Dobropillia, where Ukrainian forces continue counteroffensive operations. He noted that military commanders confirmed “stabilisation of the defensive line” and increased coordination among units. Zelenskiy also stressed the need to strengthen defences and supply soldiers with critical resources.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its troops had cleared 35 buildings of Ukrainian forces and were tightening pressure near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region. However, Reuters could not independently verify the battlefield reports from either side. Ukraine’s General Staff denied any encirclement of its units in Pokrovsk.
According to the open-source intelligence platform DeepState, Russian troops have advanced deeper into Pokrovsk and surrounding areas but have yet to secure full control. The situation remains critical as Russian forces entrench positions in southern districts, with nearby settlements reportedly falling under Moscow’s control.
Once home to about 60,000 residents, Pokrovsk is now largely deserted. Its capture would provide Russia a crucial staging point to push toward Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, Ukraine’s last major strongholds in the Donetsk region. Despite Moscow’s claims of momentum, Ukraine maintains that the front lines remain largely static, with only marginal territorial shifts in recent months.
