A former Google DeepMind researcher has warned that rapidly advancing artificial intelligence could pose a severe threat to humanity, adding to growing calls from prominent AI figures for stronger safety measures and regulation.
Bilal Chughtai, who recently resigned from his position as a research engineer at Google DeepMind, raised concerns Monday about the direction of AI development. He said superintelligent AI systems capable of significantly surpassing human abilities could emerge within the next few years, potentially creating unprecedented risks.
“I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome,” Chughtai wrote in posts on X and LinkedIn.
His comments add to mounting AI safety concerns among researchers and technology executives. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said last week that concerns about the potential dangers of advanced AI contributed to his decision to resign.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also published an essay over the weekend advocating greater regulation of powerful AI models and urging the industry to slow the pace of development. His proposal received support from several influential technology leaders, including xAI founder Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Altman separately said OpenAI had delayed plans for an initial public offering until after 2026, citing concerns surrounding AI safety and the evolving regulatory environment.
The warnings come as governments face increasing pressure to determine how advanced AI systems should be governed without undermining technological innovation.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States already has safeguards in place for regulating AI companies. At the same time, his administration continues to promote investment in AI infrastructure.
During a summit in Los Angeles, Trump called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as part of efforts to encourage the construction of additional data centers.
The contrasting positions highlight an intensifying global debate over AI safety, regulation and development as researchers consider how quickly increasingly capable systems could emerge and what safeguards may be necessary to control their risks.
