SoftBank Group shares surged on Tuesday, recovering much of the previous session’s steep decline as investors welcomed fresh details surrounding the planned U.S. listing of its data center unit, SB Energy.
SoftBank Group Corp. jumped 8.1% to 6,314 yen, ranking among the strongest performers on Japan’s Nikkei 225, which edged 0.1% higher. The rebound followed an 11% slide on Monday as concerns surrounding artificial intelligence investments weighed heavily on the stock.
Investor sentiment improved after new details emerged about SB Energy’s initial public offering. The company, which filed for a U.S. listing earlier in September, plans to sell $500 million worth of shares to Japanese investors as part of the IPO, according to a filing cited by Reuters.
SB Energy could reportedly target a valuation of up to $50 billion, potentially delivering a substantial boost to SoftBank’s investment portfolio if the listing proves successful.
The IPO has also attracted backing from major technology companies. Nvidia has committed $1.5 billion through a private placement priced at the IPO level, while OpenAI holds warrants valued at approximately $5.5 billion, according to SB Energy’s prospectus released earlier this month.
A successful SB Energy IPO could provide SoftBank with an important financial catalyst as uncertainty surrounds the timing of returns from its OpenAI investment. OpenAI recently indicated that it does not plan to pursue an initial public offering in 2026, disappointing investors who had anticipated a potential near-term liquidity event.
That development contributed to Monday’s sharp drop in SoftBank shares.
The Japanese technology investment group has also faced pressure from a broader selloff in AI-related stocks. Calls from industry leaders and researchers to slow artificial intelligence development because of safety concerns have raised questions about future spending and valuations across the sector.
Tuesday’s rebound suggests investors are shifting some attention back toward SB Energy’s potential IPO windfall, helping SoftBank shares recover after recent AI-driven volatility.
