This election season has been difficult for everyone, more than most other ones in recent memory. As a result, the American public is in a lot of emotional stress due to the election, and a study reveals just how much. Also, it would seem that “Government Ethics,” “Abortion,” and “Immigration” are the topics that matter most to internet users.
A recent article by Politico detailed how Americans are feeling about this election based on their interaction with therapists. It revealed that up to 90 percent of the participants said that this election was causing them some level of distress and they were of the opinion that it’s the worst one ever. Of that number, 30 percent were stressed over Hillary Clinton while 40 percent were worried about Donald Trump.
In an attempt to see if these findings still hold true, Wired did their own digging to see how voters feel now. Instead of talking directly to people, however, the publication opted to base their findings on Google search results.
Their findings indicated that in swing states, search words like “vote + voting” correlated with depression. However, when typing both “Donald Trump” and “Hillary Clinton,” the depression within red states become palpable. These results indicate that the anxiety that voters feel depend on what they are searching for and varies depending on the region.
Speaking of searches, it would seem that Facebook users are discussing “Government Ethics” the most on the social media platform, CNBC reports. On Google Trends, meanwhile, the most commonly sought after election topics are “Immigration” and “Abortion.”
These search keywords reflect the state of mind of voters and the agenda that matter most to them. The same thing goes with the most-discussed topic on Facebook where confidence in politicians and the government, in general, is at an all-time low.
