The European Commission has unveiled an ambitious defense roadmap featuring four flagship projects aimed at bolstering Europe’s security by 2030. The initiative comes amid rising fears of potential Russian aggression and growing calls for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own defence.
At the core of the plan are two urgent projects: the European Drone Defense Initiative, previously known as the “drone wall,” and Eastern Flank Watch, a comprehensive strategy to fortify the EU’s eastern borders across land, air, and sea. According to the Commission, both initiatives are set to achieve initial operational capacity by the end of next year, with the drone system expected to be fully functional by 2026 and the Eastern Flank Watch by 2028.
In addition, the roadmap includes the creation of a European Air Shield to counter missile and airborne threats, and a European Space Shield designed to protect the EU’s critical space infrastructure. Together, these projects mark a significant step toward a unified and resilient European defense framework.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the urgency of strengthening defenses, warning that “danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends.” Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal hailed the proposals as a “turning point in Europe’s security thinking,” highlighting Ukraine’s integration into Europe’s collective defence network.
European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius described the roadmap as a “mega-plan for delivery,” featuring defined timelines, goals, and accountability measures. While the Commission did not disclose exact costs, Kubilius noted that EU nations could leverage national defense budgets and the €150 billion SAFE loans scheme launched earlier this year to fund the projects.
If approved by EU leaders, these initiatives could transform Europe’s defense capabilities and signal a new era of strategic autonomy and preparedness.
