The congressional committee in charge of investigating the January 6 insurrection is obtaining more and more evidence regarding the efforts to overturn the 2020 election. A new report reveals that the panel has made more progress in linking former President Donald Trump to seditious conspiracy.
A report by The Guardian reveals that the congressional panel is one step closer to tying Trump to the seditious conspiracy surrounding the attempts to overturn the 2020 elections and the January 6 insurrection. The House investigators have put a theory together last week after obtaining new evidence and video footage that showed coordination between right-wing militia groups the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, according to two sources.
The counsel on the three groups within the congressional panel is expected to use the findings to come to a decision on the direction of the rest of the committee’s probe. The “red team” is looking into the organizers of the January 6 rally that preceded the insurrection, the “gold team” is looking into the former president, and the “purple team” is looking into the militia groups that were in attendance.
The committee has so far obtained a massive amount of evidence about the connections between the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers in recent weeks after receiving non-publicized video footage of the leaders of both militia groups meeting in Washington ahead of the insurrection.
The panel has also heard testimony from filmmaker Nick Quested Wednesday last week regarding the contacts between the militia group leaders, far-right political operatives, and the organizers of the Save America rallies. The information from the evidence could play a big part in whether Trump “oversaw a criminal conspiracy” as part of his efforts to stay in power by overturning the 2020 election results.
Another report by the New York Times revealed that investigators of the congressional committee have enough evidence to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department but are holding it off out of the belief it might compromise the probe. This also comes amidst the growing pressure for DOJ Attorney General Merrick Garland to indict the former president.
Former inspector general Michael Bromwich told The Guardian’s Peter Stone said that there is a lot more happening in the Justice Department behind the scenes compared to what the public knows. Bromwich explained that the Justice Department is working on what would be the most complex investigation in the country’s history, using the highest number of prosecutors, investigators, and digital evidence.
