Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. just unveiled its new restaurant design that will help the company attain its sustainability goal. With its all-electric blueprint, the restaurant is hoping to successfully reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
Chipotle Mexican Grill’s target is to reduce its carbon footprint in half by the year 2030. The sustainable design of its stores will help it maximize energy efficiency. The company revealed its new restaurant layout and plans on Tuesday, April 11.
The company will test this sustainable design this year, and in 2024, it is looking to use all-electric equipment in its more than 100 locations in the United States. Aside from the equipment, Chipotle also added other sustainable elements to the restaurant design as well.
For the test, it has opened two restaurants with new features, and these are located in Jacksonville, Florida and Gloucester, Virginia. Chipotle said that a third store is also set to be opened in Castle Rock, Colorado, this summer.
Some of the key features in Chipotle’s new sustainable restaurants include the use of electricity-powered equipment and systems instead of the usual gas-powered ones. There is also the addition of cactus-leather chairs, smaller cook lines, use of biodegradable packaging for food and beverages, decorations made from recycled materials, and use of heat pump water heaters.
Some of the stores will also have solar panels on the rooftop, plus electric vehicle charging stations. For the menu customers can expect to see new vegan food items on Chipotle’s menu as part of its sustainability initiatives.
"With our aggressive development goal in North America, we hold ourselves accountable to reduce the environmental impact of our restaurants," Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, said in a press release. "We are aiming to incorporate some elements of our responsible restaurant design into many of our new restaurant openings going forward."
