Clamor for “Bodyguard” Season 2 has been making the rounds on the web since the previous installment concluded a few months ago. And with the British television drama making its way to Netflix yesterday, the anticipation for a second season is picking up once more.
However, news regarding “Bodyguard” Season 2 is scarce at this point as BBC and show creator Jed Mercurio haven’t announced anything just yet. While they are quiet, speculations are heavy that a second installment will be greenlighted by the network if the ratings of the previous season are anything to go by.
The finale of the first installment broke several records a few months ago as it received the highest mark for the most watched drama series in the U.K. ever, The Independent reported. Although the first episode was quite the hit, Mercurio admitted that they didn’t expect the show to be this popular. When asked by Entertainment Weekly whether BBC has ordered a “Bodyguard” Season 2, Mercurio didn’t provide any hint at all.
The writer said he’s busy at the moment handling things in “Line of Duty,” adding that his “first order of business is to get this other show going.” As for the main character of the series itself, Mercurio said that he wanted to create a protagonist who is multilayered. This is one of the aspects that contributed to the success of the first installment and will surely play a huge role in “Bodyguard” Season 2.
The show creator explained that although Sergeant David Budd’s (Richard Madden) job is to guard politicians, they also want the character to pose a threat to those he’s protecting. This threat came in the form of psychological volatility and instability obtained during Budd’s days serving in the Middle East. It will be interesting to see if this facet of Budd will put him in a serious spot in the “Bodyguard” Season 2, especially since topics regarding veterans with PTSD have been making the headlines of late.
