Bethesda Softworks finally announced its long-rumored role-playing game this week, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018. The new title is now called “Starfield,” but it might not be released in time for the current generation of consoles.
“Starfield” is recognized as the first RPG project that Bethesda has taken on in the last 25 years. With a project of this significance, fans might understand why the company would not risk rushing its development.
In fact, Bethesda Game Studios game director Todd Howard has already implied that making “Starfield” is likely to take several years to finish. And there is a possibility that its release will happen at a time when newer generations of consoles are already on the market.
When asked about this possibility, Howard told GameSpot that the company has yet to decide if “Starfield” could be released when the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems are still the most modern gaming hardware.
"I can't absolutely say yes to [leaving current generation console behind]. We're not going to limit the game that way yet. I'm willing to [leave current generation consoles behind] but it's not a priority right now. I'd put it that way,” Howard said.
The game director also implied that in the past, Bethesda showed it was willing to take its time in developing a game without rushing it just for the sake of launching it on current-generation consoles.
He added, "When you're making a game, you want to get the best stuff on the screen, and then you optimize and you do things and if it lands here, we can cast a wider net, great. But if we can't ... we've done that before."
If “Starfield” ends up as a new RPG released on upcoming console generations, fans may be looking at a launch scheduled within the next couple of years. That is, at least, based on the speculated announcement of new Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Several reports have been claiming that the PlayStation 5 and the codenamed Xbox Scarlett are slated to be unveiled in 2020.
