Right-wing commentator and MAGA movement leader Steve Bannon has issued a stark warning about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership, claiming his continued tenure could jeopardize President-elect Donald Trump’s legislative agenda. Speaking at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest event and during a podcast appearance, Bannon declared, “Johnson must go,” rallying Trump’s supporters and amplifying tensions within the Republican Party.
Johnson’s Leadership Faces GOP Rebellion
Speaker Mike Johnson’s hold on power is being tested as dissatisfaction brews among House Republicans. The Louisiana congressman, who ascended to the role in October 2023 after weeks of GOP infighting, is now navigating a rebellion sparked by his handling of the latest government funding bill. The legislation passed Congress without incorporating Trump’s key debt ceiling demands, which many Republicans see as a capitulation to Democrats.
Johnson’s position has grown more precarious as prominent MAGA voices, including Bannon, call for his removal. Bannon’s criticism underscores the growing divide between traditional conservatives and Trump-aligned Republicans, with the latter demanding more aggressive tactics to counter Democrats.
Trump himself has sent mixed signals about Johnson’s future. While he recently told Fox News Digital that Johnson could remain speaker if he acts “decisively and tough,” his dissatisfaction with the bipartisan spending deal has left Johnson’s allies uncertain about his standing with the president-elect.
Trump-Backed Bill Fails, Adding Pressure
The controversy intensified last week when a Trump-endorsed spending package, which included provisions for raising the debt ceiling, failed in the House. Although the GOP later passed a revised version without the debt ceiling measure, the incident has fueled criticism of Johnson’s leadership abilities. Trump supporters argue the speaker’s failure to rally the Republican majority undermines their broader legislative goals.
Adding to the pressure, several House Republicans, including Representatives Victoria Spartz of Indiana and Andy Biggs of Arizona, remain undecided on whether to support Johnson in the upcoming January 3 speaker vote. With the GOP holding a slim 219-215 majority, Johnson cannot afford to lose more than two Republican votes without turning to Democrats—a scenario that seems unlikely, given Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ firm opposition.
Bannon’s Outspoken Criticism Sparks Reaction Online
Bannon’s remarks have ignited fierce debate among Republicans and MAGA supporters online, with many taking to social media to express their views:
- @MAGAUnite2024 tweeted, “Bannon is right. Johnson is a weak leader. We need someone who can deliver for Trump.”
- @ConservativeVoice posted, “This GOP infighting is embarrassing. Johnson is doing his best with a slim majority. Give him a chance!”
- @TrumpForever added, “If Johnson doesn’t go, Trump’s agenda is doomed. The MAGA movement needs to act now.”
- @PatriotPundit argued, “Johnson is far better than McCarthy ever was. Bannon should focus on uniting Republicans, not dividing them.”
- @FreedomFirst wrote, “Trump’s team has a plan. Trust the process. Attacking Johnson only helps the Democrats.”
- @RightWingRebel said, “Bannon calling for ‘hyper-partisanship’ is exactly what the GOP needs. Johnson is not up to the task.”
