Serving as the latest news coming out of Pandora, it would appear that “Avatar 2” will be featuring Asian star Michelle Yeoh as the newest cast member to join the franchise. Her character will be the scientist Dr. Karina Mogue, which might disappoint many of her fans. She often plays tough, formidable fighters on-screen, after all. Then again, who says she can’t be both brainy and brawny in the upcoming sequel?
Now, there are several implications with regards to this particular development. In a Variety report, the franchise brain James Cameron was quoted as saying that the actress is known for memorable characters. This means that Dr. Mogue might be one of the most memorable figures in “Avatar 2” and beyond.
On that note, this could also be an indication of just how far along the movies are in production. If they are still adding new actors to the wagon, it could be indicative that there is a lot more of the shooting to go. Then again, “Avatar 2” is set to come out in 2020, so there is still plenty of time for production to wrap up.
As for what Michelle Yeoh will be bringing to “Avatar 2” herself, the answer is quite a lot. Anyone who has ever watched any of her movies will know that the actress brings a palpable level of gravitas to her films. One of the most notable roles she has played in recent years is as the main antagonist in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians.” As Eleanor, the actress was restrained and convincing.
With the death of Grace (Sigourney Weaver), someone will need to fill the sizeable shoes that she left behind. This could then mean that Michelle Yeoh could play the mentor figure that the departed character held. Fans will likely see this for themselves when the movie premieres on Dec. 18, 2020.
