Apple Inc. is reportedly entering the AI home robot business after discarding its electric vehicle ambitions. The iPhone maker has reportedly shifted its focus to AI-powered robotics for homes.
According to CNBC, Apple has started research and other work on developing home robots. The news first came out on Wednesday, April 3, almost two months after the tech company ditched its EV project.
Apple’s Rumored New Venture
The Cupertino, California-headquartered firm is shifting to robots powered by artificial intelligence. The target is to create devices specially made for personal use in homes.
According to the reports, Apple wants to produce robots that can follow homeowners around their houses. Sources familiar with the research team also shared that another item is a tabletop tool or appliance that uses robotics to adjust a display screen.
Moreover, the insiders said that the team working on Apple’s new robotics venture is comprised of experts from the company’s hardware engineering unit and AI & machine learning team. They are managing the work on personal robotics, which is still in the early development phase.
Aiming to Introduce New Products
Engadget reported that since Apple gave up its electric vehicle efforts, it is searching for its next revolutionary product to help the brand stay dominant in the market. The company’s other goal is to find new sources of profits since its EV push failed to take off.
Meanwhile, Apple disbanded its team of experts working on electric vehicles. The company named this team the Special Projects Group, and it was a secret program that first surfaced in 2014 as the company needed to hire automotive engineers and other roles required for EV development.
