Fans calling for the production of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” have recently achieved another milestone after a long-running online petition garnered more than 150,000 signatures. However, the deciding party -- Disney, in this case -- remains mum.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’: More than 150,000 fans want a sequel
“Alita: Battle Angel” was based on the 1990s Japanese manga series “Gunnm” by Yukito Kishiro was introduced as a live-action cyberpunk film last year produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Starring Rosa Salazar as the titular protagonist, the movie adaptation gathered a loyal fanbase, known online as the Alita Army, that has been pushing for the sequel to be made.
The Change.org petition put up shortly after the first movie’s premiere last year has close to 150,500 signatures, as of this writing. Many of the supporters just signed a few minutes ago, likely because the movie is becoming more accessible as it gets TV premieres in various cable networks around the world.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’: What would Disney do with the franchise
Considering it has been more than a year since the first movie’s premiere, it is quite impressive that the adaptation still has the ability to gather new fans. On the other hand, this newfound followers and support might not count as much as it would have if it translated to ticket sales last year.
The first movie raked in over $400 million in the worldwide box office, but that is not a groundbreaking figure since the movie was reportedly produced with a $170 million budget. Since this aspect is a major deciding factor for the mainstream movie industry, the chances to see “Alita: Battle Angel 2” get made is not that great.
Additionally, the movie franchise has now joined the very star-studded bench of IPs after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox last year. The latter served as the global distributor of the first movie. Even if Disney decided to overlook the first movie’s box office performance and take a chance at making the cyberpunk series, “Alita: Battle Angel 2” might not be placed on top of the studio’s priority list.
