Despite a major flub in announcing the Best Picture winner, this year’s Academy Awards saw breaking “La La Land”’s winning streak in almost all of the categories in the awards circuit.
The Washington Post reported that Mahershala Ali’s win as Best Supporting Actor for “Moonlight” makes him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. Ali, who’s also known as the main villain Cornell 'Cottonmouth' Stokes in “Marvel’s Luke Cage” on Netflix, marked not just a historic first for Muslim actors in Hollywood, but also Muslim Americans in general amidst the tension surrounding Donald Trump’s presidential travel ban on immigrants travelling from Muslim-majority nations. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who also won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film “The Salesman,” bowed out of the ceremony in response to Trump’s ban.
Viola Davis’ win as Best Supporting Actress for “Fences” is also another historic feat. Bustle reports that her win on Sunday is one Grammy award away to become an EGOT holder, or Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The actress has won an Emmy for her role as Annalise Keating in “How To Get Away With Murder” and garnered her first Tony for playing Rose Maxson in the Broadway production of “Fences.”
“Hacksaw Ridge” won two Oscars for both film and sound editing, while the Amazon-produced “Manchester by the Sea” won the coveted Best Actor (for Casey Affleck), and Best Original Screenplay.
