The first trailer for Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” dropped this week, and multiple reports are saying that the series, which is based on a bestselling Young Adult novel by Jay Asher, appears “dark” for a different reason.
In the book, “13 Reason Why” is about Clay, a high school student who received a package of cassette tapes from a classmate and former friend Hannah, who recently killed herself. While the book unravels all the compounding reasons that made Hannah to end her life, the trailer speaks otherwise, Slate reported:
“Given the premise of the series, the trailer was inevitably going to be dark, but this new one is surprisingly so in how it presents the story as more of a mystery thriller than a somber examination of how a life ended, with Clay apparently investigating Hannah’s death as one would a murder and confronting suspects. There are chase scenes, dramatic confrontations, and—sheesh, is that a gun?”
If we based the synopsis of the latest trailer, the 13-episode series, which is produced by which is produced by actress Selena Gomez and her mother Mandy Teefy, appears to be taking a departure from the book version. The show teases that there might be more than just friendship between Hannah (Katherine Langford) and Clay (Dylan Minnette), and there could be more than just bullying involved, with some of the characters cautioning Clay about finding out the reasons behind Hannah’s death, as Buzzfeed demonstrated.
“13 Reason Why” will debut on Netflix on March 31.
