Dr Darren Saunders is a cancer biologist at the University of NSW and visiting fellow at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, Garvan Institute. Dr Saunders was a founding member and deputy chair of the Australian Academy of Science Early-Mid Career Researcher Forum. He was awarded an Australian Leadership Award (2012), and NSW Life Scientist Research Award (2010) and has held fellowships from the US Dept. of Defense and Cancer Institute NSW. Dr Saunders leads a research group focused on two key cellular stress adaptation mechanisms in cancer and neurodegeneration: maintenance of proteostasis via the Ubiquitin Proteasome System, and metabolic reprogramming. His work integrates various platforms to better understand genotype-phenotype relationships including proteomics, genomics, and metabolomics and developing creative technology-based approaches to visualizing and communicating complex data.
