Prakash Kashwan

Co-Director, Research Program on Economic and Social Rights, Human Rights Institute, and Associate Professor, Department of Political Science., University of Connecticut
Professor Kashwan is an interdisciplinary social scientist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. He also co-directs the Research Program on Economic and Social Rights at UConn's renowned Human Rights Institute.

He is a member of the Expert Group for scoping of transformative change assessment at the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He is a Faculty Affiliate of the Ostrom Workshop, Indiana University, Bloomington, a Senior Research Fellow, Earth System Governance (ESG) Project, and co-convener of the Climate Justice Network. He was a member of the Academic Working Group on International Governance of Climate Engineering convened by the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment, Washington D.C.

He is the author of Democracy in the Woods: Environmental Conservation and Social Justice in India, Tanzania, and Mexico (Oxford University Press, 2017), and an associate editor of the journal Progress in Development Studies. He has also contributed popular commentaries to the Washington Post and the Guardian, among others.

Professor Kashwan's research articles have been published in a number of highly reputed research journals, such as World Development, Ecological Economics, Regional Environmental Change, Land Use Policy, International Journal of the Commons, Global Environmental Politics, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Sustainability, and Global Transition. His research-based commentaries have appeared in popular media platforms including the Guardian, the Washington Post, Wilson Center's web platform New Security Beat, and various podcasts and radio talk shows.
