Mahfoud Amara

Associate Professor in Sport Policy & Management, Qatar University
Dr Mahfoud Amara is Associate Professor in Sport Policy & Management.
His principal research area is comparative sports policy and management, and he has a specific interest in sport in Arab and Muslim contexts (society, history, business, culture, religion, political and philosophical thoughts), having published material on the politics of the Pan-Arab Games, sport in colonial and post-colonial contexts, sport and media in the Arab world, sport and modernization in the Gulf region; sport development and development through sport. His other research interest is sport and culture, sport policy and management/business and marketing of sport. Before moving to Qatar University (Sports Sciences Program at the College of Arts and Sciences) Dr Amara was member of Sport Management and Policy Group and the Centre of Olympic Studies and Research at Loughborough University. He is Author of a book about Sport in the Arab World, entitled "Sport, Politics and Society in the Arab World", published by Palgrave and Macmillan (2012). He is Co- Editor with Alberto Testa of "Sport in Islam and Muslim Communities", Routledge (December 2015), and with John Nauright "Sport in the African World" (Routledge 2019). He published numerous papers in refereed international Journals and book chapters edited by leading experts in the domain of sport and social sciences (policy, management, sociology).

Specialties: Sport policy/politics, Sport Management, Sport Development, Sport in the Arab World and in Muslim Contexts. Fellow of Higher Education Academy. Member of the academic editorial team (for Asia) of the International Journal of the History of Sport . Invited Reviewer for a number of Journals in Sport and Social Sciences, including for example: Journal of Contemporary Ethnography; Leisure Studies; Sport, Education and Society; International Journal of Sport History; European Physical Education Review; European sport management quarterly.
