The XRP Ledger Foundation (XRPLF) has reassured the cryptocurrency community that XRP's total supply remains secure following an emergency security update addressing a vulnerability that could have allowed unauthorized token creation.
The foundation confirmed that no additional XRP was minted through the recently discovered bug. XRP's original supply remains capped at 100 billion tokens, while transaction fee burns have reduced the circulating total to approximately 99.986 billion XRP.
The vulnerability was resolved through the emergency XRP Ledger 3.4.1 upgrade, which was quickly deployed after developers identified a potential exploit in the network's payment engine.
Ripple's head of engineering, J. Ayo Akinyele, explained that the security flaw originated in payment engine code dating back to 2015. Attackers could theoretically have generated spendable XRP by creating hundreds of specially structured offers on the XRP Ledger's decentralized exchange and executing them through a single payment.
Fortunately, researchers at Veria AI, including Cayden Liao, discovered the vulnerability through the XRPL Bug Bounty program before any known exploitation occurred.
The XRP Ledger Foundation emphasized that account balances remain publicly verifiable and that developers continuously monitor network activity to protect XRP's supply integrity.
The emergency patch received coordinated support from RippleX, XRPL developers, validators, and the foundation to minimize potential security risks.
Separately, the XRP Ledger activated its Batch amendment on October 9, enabling multiple transactions to be processed together. A lower-severity validation issue involving Batch transaction wrappers was also addressed through the fixBatchV1_2 amendment.
Looking ahead, the foundation plans to strengthen XRP Ledger security through artificial intelligence testing, formal verification, expanded bug bounty initiatives, and closer cooperation with cybersecurity researchers.
Meanwhile, XRP price increased approximately 1% over 24 hours to $1.41, trading between $1.39 and $1.42. Trading volume surged 40%, reflecting renewed investor interest following the security announcement.
CoinGlass data showed XRP futures open interest at $3.07 billion, declining 0.45% over four hours but gaining approximately 0.80% across 24 hours.
Despite mixed derivatives activity, cryptocurrency analysts remain optimistic about XRP's price outlook following a rebound exceeding 7% in recent sessions.
Market watchers are closely monitoring the $1.60 resistance level, with a sustained breakout potentially supporting further bullish momentum.
