US under Trump Series: Risk of government shut down looms as Trump takes hard stance on border wall funding

The United States’ government is facing a serious risk of a shut down this year as Democrats prepare to oppose President’ budget and tax reforms and would look for concession in these two areas as well as in healthcare in exchange for a debt ceiling increase. While both treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin and Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell remain confident over the debt ceiling increase, Democrats are ready to fight to their teeth to oppose President Trump and his agendas at any cost. McConnell said that there is zero chance that Congress will fail to raise the debt ceiling.

During a rally in Phoenix Arizona, President Trump said that he is prepared for a government shutdown in order to receive funding for his border wall. During the campaign, President Trump promised to erect a border wall along the Southern border with Mexico, in order to halt drug and human trafficking and put an end to illegal immigration via the southern route. He said at the rally, “If we have to close down our government, we’re building that wall….We’re going to have our wall.”

Over the years, U.S. debt ceiling has become a political issue and instrument to hold opposition hostage. Due to this political hostage taking, the United States came very close to defaulting on its obligation in 2011 and has led to a government shut down in 2013. According to the Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, the government can remain funded until September this year without raising the debt ceiling has urged the Congress to do an increase at the earliest.
