UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been facing pressure this week to step down following a large number of resignations of his ministers. Johnson on Friday bowed to the growing calls to resign as he announced his resignation as the country’s prime minister.

Johnson announced Thursday that he would be stepping down as the country’s prime minister following growing calls to resign by members of his party to do so. The recent resignations of several ministers and other colleagues have also added to the pressure on Johnson to resign.

“The process of choosing that new leader should begin now,” said Johnson in front of Number 10 Downing Street. “And today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will until a new leader is in place.”

When it comes to possible replacements, a report by the Daily Mail revealed that deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and former senior minister Michael Gove are apparently not going to be running to succeed Johnson.

On the same day, Johnson also told cabinet ministers that the government would not seek to implement major policy changes until the Conservative Party had elected a new leader. The outgoing British leader also said that the government would only focus on delivering the agenda of which it was elected and that major financial decisions would be left to the new prime minister.

Following Johnson’s announcement of resignation, the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the outgoing leader for his support of defending Ukraine’s interests following Russia’s invasion back in February.

“We all heard this news with sadness. Not only me but also the entire Ukrainian society, which is very sympathetic to you,” said Zelenskyy’s office in a statement following a phone conversation between the two leaders. “We have no doubt that Great Britain’s support will be preserved, but your personal leadership and charisma made it special.”

Johnson also promised Zelenskyy that he would continue to work with partners to end the grain blockade put up by Russian vessels in the readout of the call from Johnson’s office. Johnson also praised Zelenskyy’s leadership throughout the entire war.
