U.S. President Donald Trump has been invited to address a joint session of Congress on March 4, 2025. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson extended the invitation, describing it as a privilege to have Trump share his "America First" vision. The announcement was made on social media platform X and accompanied by a formal letter from Johnson's office.
This will mark Trump’s first joint congressional address since taking office on January 20, 2025. The Republican Party holds a slim majority in the House and a stronger majority in the Senate. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the president's participation.
Trump is expected to outline his administration's priorities for the year, including his controversial plan to leverage higher tariffs on imports to fund extended tax cuts. While he has threatened to implement broad import tariffs, none have been enacted yet.
The proposal to use tariff revenue for government funding and tax reductions has sparked debate. Many Republicans, particularly fiscal conservatives, remain skeptical about the plan’s feasibility, citing concerns over the stability of tariff revenue and potential fallout from trade wars affecting local economies.
Supporters of Trump’s approach argue that tariffs could serve as a significant revenue source, akin to personal and corporate taxes, helping to finance government programs and fulfill promises of tax relief.
The upcoming address is expected to clarify Trump’s economic strategies and set the tone for his legislative agenda.
