When thinking about electric cars, it’s a fair bet that Arnold Schwarzenegger would not be first on anyone’s mind as a target customer. After all, if it’s not the geeky, nerdy types that the Prius is aimed at, it’s the rich, techie favorites of Tesla. This is no longer the case with the introduction of the vehicle by Austrian company Kriesel that can go off road.
The main model vehicle outfitted with the electric engine is actually a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which is meant to be a typical gas-guzzling monster, Mashable reports. However, by replacing the engine with an all-electric unit, it becomes a viable green dirt rider.
More impressively, according to the specs provided, the G-Class will now have a range of over 186 miles per charge. In its native form, the gas engine goes for 13 miles/gallon, which doesn’t really put the vehicle too high on the efficiency list.
As for its performance, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds and can reach top speeds of over 133mph. Furthermore, it can reach an 80 percent charge capacity in as little as 25 minutes, which is exceedingly impressive by EV standards.
One of the main drivers of this development was Schwarzenegger himself, who wanted to drive his G-Class without worrying about its effects on the environment, TechCrunch reports. This is why he became a high-profile stakeholder at Kriesel. He even contributed to the design of the vehicle and based on his statements during a press release, the Terminator is incredibly excited about it.
“To me, with the electric version of this fantastic car, a dream has become true,” Schwarzenegger told reporters. “The initial test drive was a real pleasure: The Kreisel is incredibly sporty and perfectly benefits from the advantages e-mobility has to offer. I really look forward to the following test runs and to the gradual further development in California.”
