Speculation is growing that Tesla's Giga Shanghai plant will begin manufacturing a seven-seat Model Y, with an expected launch in China and Europe by October. This move could cater to families seeking more space in their electric crossover.
Tesla's Giga Shanghai Could Produce Seven-Seat Model Y by October
Speculation has been circulating in China that Tesla's Giga Shanghai plant is manufacturing a seven-seat version of the Model Y crossover. European and Chinese markets would supposedly get the seven-seat Model Y, manufactured by Giga Shanghai, in October.
According to Teslarati, Giga Shanghai's purported new Model Y variation was first reported by National Business Daily, a Chinese media site. Additionally, the article stated that Giga Shanghai's seven-seat Model Y has finished all necessary certifications for its impending European distribution.
Seven-Seat Model Y Expected to Be Heavier than Current Five-Seat Version
The Chinese branch of Tesla Motors was rumored to be planning to launch a revised version of its best-selling electric crossover in the second quarter of 2024, with sales set to begin in the new year. The seven-seat Model Y was rumored to be 45 kg (99 lbs) heavier than the five-seat model at the time, with a passenger weight limit increase of 70 kg (154 lbs).
While National Business Daily's assertions appear reasonable, Shanghai Securities News, another local news outlet, has cast doubt on a number of them.
As reported by National Business Daily (via CnEVPost), Giga Shanghai was allegedly manufacturing seven-seat Model Y versions. However, according to Shanghai Securities News, which cited an alleged Tesla insider, this was denied. Despite other allegations in the paper, the Tesla insider chose not to dispute them.
Tesla Giga Shanghai Has Only Produced Five-Seat Model Y Units to Date
Tesla Giga Shanghai has only manufactured five-seat versions of the Model Y so far; however, China already supplies the vehicle to multiple areas. The Giga Berlin-produced Model Y units are no different.
The seven-seat layout is an extra $2,000 option available only on US-spec Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles at the moment.
It's true that the Model Y's interior is best suited for five passengers, but offering an additional row of seats could entice buyers with bigger families.
Model Y’s Third Row Best for Kids, Not Adults
A third-row seat in a Model Y may be too small for adults, but it's ideal for younger kids.
