Tesla, Inc. is on the brink of revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) market by introducing wireless charging capabilities following its strategic acquisition of Wiferion, a pioneer in wireless charging technology. This move enhances Tesla's innovative edge and signals a shift toward more user-friendly EV infrastructure, underscoring the company's commitment to advancing EV technology and accessibility.
Tesla Advances in Wireless Charging: A Future Without Cables Begins with Cybertruck
Wireless EV charging is still in the early stages of development, but it benefits people, and automakers recognize this. Tesla has been working on wireless EV charging for quite some time, acquiring Wiferion last year.
Wiferion confirmed that Tesla had purchased it. Tesla sold the company a few months later but retained its engineers for internal wireless charging development projects, per Teslarati.
Tesla also confirmed last year that it was developing inductive wireless charging for its vehicles.
In a 2023 interview with Jay Leno, Tesla's Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy both stated that the company was working on wireless charging:
"Oh, we're working on the inductive charging. So you don't need to plug something in at that point. You just pull in your garage, drive over the pad, and you're charging."
Numerous third-party companies have also been working on wireless charging technology. However, Tesla appears poised to begin offering the technology soon, as a fan on X spotted it in the Service Manual.
This Service Manual is for the Cybertruck, so the all-electric pickup will be the first vehicle in the Tesla lineup to receive the technology. After teasing wireless charging at Tesla Investor Day in early 2023, the automaker may prepare owners for the technology's rollout in the coming months.
Tesla has not made any recent comments on the rollout of wireless charging, with the last mention coming from von Holzhausen and Moravy during the Jay Leno interview. However, this discovery in the service manual indicates that things are moving forward and could be implemented sooner than expected.
Tesla's Strategic Acquisition of Wiferion Marks a New Era in Wireless EV Charging Innovation
As per last year's report by Teslarati, Tesla has successfully concluded the acquisition of Wiferion, a wireless charging company. This significant move comes just months after Tesla's announcement to develop a wireless EV charging platform for its vehicles, keeping our readers well-informed and updated on the latest electric vehicle technology sector developments.
A source report on Tesla's impending acquisition of Wiferion, initially reported by German media, kept our readers engaged and connected to the latest industry news.
According to a filing, Wiferion shareholders were preparing to sell their shares in anticipation of Tesla Engineering's acquisition:
"The shareholders intend to sell their shares in the company to Tesla International BV by means of a purchase agreement." The acquisition is complete.
TeslaMag first reported the completed transaction. Wiferion has already updated its website's footer to reflect Tesla's purchase. Tesla International BV is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in the Netherlands.
The acquisition process was nearly complete by last month and was conducted with transparency. Several Wiferion investors inquired about a possible sale, and while they confirmed the company's sale, they did not disclose the buyer.
Wiferion entered the North American market last year by signing a global licensing agreement with WiTricity, a company that promoted wireless charging technology using a Tesla Model 3 in promotional campaigns.
