BOSTON, April 24, 2018 -- AMCP Annual Meeting - Tabula Rasa HealthCare, Inc., (TRHC) (NASDAQ:TRHC), a healthcare technology company advancing the field of medication safety, today announced its Optimized Opioid Solution™ to identify and prevent unintentional opioid misuse and avoid unintentional overdose.
In the U.S., at least half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescribed opioid medication, and nearly 80% of those deaths are considered accidental or unintentional. When opioids are taken at the same time as other prescription and non-prescription medications, they may be less effective for relieving pain. As a result, patients may take more frequent and higher doses, which can cause falls, hospitalizations, and even death. The challenges presented in opioid patients are exponentially amplified when patients, such as the elderly, have complex medication regimens.
Through proprietary, state-of-the-art technology, TRHC’s Optimized Opioid Solution can help curb opioid misuse (that can lead to abuse) before it starts – analyzing multi-drug risk to warn doctors about dangerous interactions and encourage safer prescribing choices.
“Competitive inhibition of drug metabolism can happen when two or more medications require the same enzyme in order to be activated or metabolized, and it is the root cause behind unintentional opioid misuse that may lead to abuse. As a result, patients taking opioids with other competing medications may not achieve the expected pain relief,” said Calvin Knowlton, PhD, CEO and Founder of TRHC. “We have developed this solution to reduce dangerous opioid drug interactions and overdose risk, optimizing pharmacotherapy and related outcomes. The ‘side effect’ of this optimization is reduction in the total cost of care.”
The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy will host its annual meeting from April 23-26 in Boston – a national convention of pharmacy practice leaders who will address strategies for stopping opioid addiction, among other topics. In addition to demonstrating its Optimized Opioid Solution, Dr. Knowlton and Brian J. Litten, Esq, Chief Strategy Officer of TRHC, will be presenting during the meeting. Conference attendees may visit the TRHC exhibit booth #109 to learn more about the Optimized Opioid Solution and the company’s mission of improving medication safety and optimizing patients’ pharmacotherapy outcomes.
