British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Downing Street on Sunday for high-level discussions focused on Ukraine, European security, and efforts to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The meeting highlighted the growing role of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in supporting Ukraine amid continued conflict with Russia. The three nations, known collectively as the E3 alliance, have emerged as some of Kyiv’s strongest international partners, providing diplomatic, military, and security assistance.
Upon arriving in London, Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of strengthening Europe’s collective defense capabilities, particularly in the field of air defense. Writing on X, the Ukrainian leader said the talks would focus on Ukraine’s wartime security needs, deeper European cooperation, and diplomatic prospects for achieving peace. He stressed that Europe must play a direct role in any negotiations and remain united and strong.
The discussions come as European leaders seek new ways to advance peace efforts. Macron recently suggested that European nations could help Ukraine and Russia develop both a ceasefire framework and a broader peace plan. However, tensions remain high, with both Moscow and Kyiv accusing each other of resisting compromise.
Last week, Zelenskiy published an open letter proposing direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the war, now entering its fifth year. Putin rejected the proposal, arguing it lacked sincerity and stating that any future agreement must provide long-term solutions.
In his letter, Zelenskiy claimed Russian citizens were increasingly affected by Ukrainian drone and missile strikes, rising inflation, and fuel shortages, creating growing support for peace. Meanwhile, Putin maintained his firm position during a meeting with international media, though he acknowledged that peace proposals backed by U.S. President Donald Trump could potentially help end the conflict if Ukraine is willing to make concessions.
The London summit underscores Europe’s continued commitment to Ukraine and renewed diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting resolution to the war.
