Snapchat To Add New Filters With Higher Quality And Spectacular AR Effects

Snapchat’s filters are one of the biggest reasons for its popularity among younger crowds, with fun, goofy, and even scary lenses being used to create some truly engaging images that can be shared with friends. The social media company is planning to step it up a notch by providing filters with better quality and some new augmented reality features.

The way the filters work or Lenses as they are called by Snapchat is to superimpose digital images on top of faces to match them in terms of size, shape, or even number. What the social media company is trying to achieve right now and hopefully implement in the future are smarter AR images, which will interact with other objects captured on the images, Digital Trends reports.

Right now, Snapchat is testing out the new Lenses internally and specific information is limited. For example, it’s unknown whether the new AR features will be activated automatically as soon as the users choose a filter or if they will have to activate the features after choosing the filters.

It’s also to be expected that the Lenses will not be released to the public for quite some time as it is not on the agenda for the social media company, according to The Information. Once the new Lenses are released, however, it’s expected that both iOS and Android users will be able to take advantage of it.

As to what the effects of the new Lenses are going to be, sparking new interest on the social media platform would definitely benefit Snapchat right now. Even as it still holds sway over the younger demographic of social media users, the social media industry is notoriously unstable. What is popular right now might not be popular a year from now. The short clip madhouse that was Vine is a perfect example of this.
