In a bold move, Apple plans to overhaul Siri with advanced AI in iOS 19, potentially ending its partnership with OpenAI. The new Siri aims to match ChatGPT's capabilities, offering users more natural conversations and the ability to perform complex tasks across apps.
Siri Falls Behind in iOS 18.1
With the most recent iOS 18.1 update, Siri has not been particularly intelligent, falling below ChatGPT and Google Assistant. On the other hand, OpenAI will make ChatGPT available to Siri in the next iOS 18.2 update from Apple, significantly enhancing its intelligence.
To counter ChatGPT, Apple is reportedly developing its own LLM models in-house for Siri, a move that Bloomberg calls "advanced large language models."
Like ChatGPT and Google Assistant, Siri in iOS 19 and macOS 16 will include conversational capabilities. Simply put, Apple is planning to make Siri sound more human-like so that customers may have better conversations with the digital assistant.
Apple AI Models to Transform Siri in iOS 19
Like ChatGPT in iOS 18.2, Siri will be able to assist users with more complicated activities both on and offline thanks to the extensive language models that are exclusive to the virtual assistant.
With the upcoming iOS 18 improvements, Siri will have more leeway to do things on the iPhone.
Example: next year's Siri might be built around Siri's ability to complete in-app tasks, which will be available in future updates. Initiating separate segments of the company's massive language models with different requests is an option. Based on the requests, iOS 19 will determine which Siri infrastructure to employ.
"The revamped Siri will rely on new Apple AI models to interact more like a human and handle tasks in a way that’s closer to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It also will make expanded use of App Intents, which allow for more precise control of third-party apps. And the software will be able to tap into features from Apple Intelligence, such as the ability to write and summarize text."
Apple's Break From OpenAI Looms
Per WCCFTECH, once the LLMs are prepared for deployment, they will substitute the present infrastructure; the business is presently testing the updated Siri in a separate app for iOS devices. The new Siri might be unveiled during Apple's WWDC event in June 2025, but it won't be accessible to the general public until 2026.
It would appear that Apple will jump at the chance to end its collaboration with OpenAI for ChatGPT integration as soon as the technology is ready, suggesting that the cooperation will not be permanent.
Support for ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 is just a stopgap measure until Apple introduces an equivalent that will allow customers to access the latest AI technologies. Current trends suggest that there may be delays, even though details about the company's new approach are scant.
