Russian bombs struck residential districts in Kharkiv on Monday, killing six people and injuring nearly 60 others as Moscow continued attacks across several Ukrainian cities, regional officials said.
Oleh Syniehubov, governor of Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, said three bombs hit separate parts of the city. At least 59 people were injured, including three children. Thirty victims were hospitalized, with three listed in serious condition.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terehov said emergency workers recovered three bodies from beneath the rubble as rescue operations continued. The strikes heavily damaged apartment buildings, destroying balconies, facades and homes while leaving debris scattered across residential areas.
Rescue teams helped shaken residents leave damaged buildings as air raid sirens sounded. Local resident Viktoriia Nahornyak said she saw two wounded neighbors covered in blood before fleeing her home with only her documents and the clothes she was wearing. Her daughter escaped safely, but the family’s cat ran away.
One victim was reportedly found dead in his bed, while another body was discovered outside and covered with a blanket. Officials also reported damage to warehouses.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, lies about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Russian border and has faced repeated Russian missile, drone and bomb attacks since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Elsewhere in Ukraine, a Russian drone struck an apartment building in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, sparking a fire. Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said three people were injured after initially becoming trapped on the ninth floor.
Russian air strikes also killed one person in Sloviansk in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Sloviansk is among several front-line cities targeted by Russian forces as they continue their gradual westward advance through the broader Donbas region.
The latest Russian strikes underscore the continuing danger facing Ukrainian civilians as aerial attacks hit residential areas far beyond the immediate front lines.
