A Russian air attack on Zaporizhzhia early Monday killed three people and injured two others, local officials confirmed. Governor Ivan Fedorov said the city of nearly 700,000 residents was struck by at least 10 aerial bombs, sparking explosions and fires.
The strikes caused significant destruction, damaging 15 apartment blocks, 10 private homes, and multiple non-residential buildings. Emergency teams rushed to the scene as residents faced another morning of terror in southeastern Ukraine.
Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 132 Russian drones overnight. However, nine drones managed to hit seven separate locations, leaving widespread damage. Drone assaults continue to be a key tactic in Russia’s ongoing war effort, testing Ukraine’s air defenses and resilience.
In the northeastern region of Sumy, drone attacks injured two people and destroyed civilian infrastructure along with private homes, Governor Oleh Hryhorov stated. Meanwhile, in the Kyiv region, emergency services reported one person injured, with residential buildings and homes also damaged.
The latest assault highlights Russia’s escalating use of aerial bombardment and drone warfare to target Ukraine’s civilian centers. Zaporizhzhia, already near the frontlines, remains a frequent target of attacks due to its strategic location and large population.
Ukraine continues to push for stronger air defense systems from Western allies as Russian strikes intensify. Despite successfully downing most drones, the scale of the bombardment underlines the ongoing threat to urban areas across the country.
The repeated targeting of residential zones has fueled global condemnation, with calls for increased support to help Ukraine defend its skies and protect civilians from Russia’s relentless attacks.
