“Riverdale” Spoilers: Was Archie, Not Jason, The Intended Victim In Sweetwater? Jughead And Betty Romance Wouldn’t Last?

Riverdale Poster

Since the latest twist in Episode 6 of The CW’s “Riverdale,” a new score of theories have emerged.

The most popular one is a budding romance between Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart). The kiss shared by the two while deep in sleuthing on Jason Blossom’s (Trevor Stine) murder generated a hashtag, and some fans waiting for the relationship to blossom.

Reinhart talked to Just Jared about the new development and said, “He just really cares about Betty because she’s so lovable and I think he can’t help it. But Betty sees this genuine, outsider in him and she can relate because I think Betty feels like an outsider at times too. I think that is what draws her to him a little bit because they both don’t necessarily fit in. Betty [will] finds out about Jughead’s homelessness and it’s kind of beautiful to see Betty accept Jughead’s past and conquer it with him.”

But some fans are not quick enough to jump on the #Bughead bandwagon. Justin Carreiro for TV Fanatic said, “I saw this romance as a possibility, but I don't think they'll last. They're caught up in the moment and the closeness of doing this investigation together. I prefer them as friends. However, I do hope this leads Jughead to start discovering stuff about himself and ends up with the story that's canon in the Archie Comics.”

Another popular theory that has popped up as of late is the possibility that Archie (KJ Apa) might have been the one who’s supposed to be killed. Citing a Reddit theory, Kaitlin Reilly for Refinery29 wrote that the similarities, down to the guys’ red hair, can’t be more than a coincidence.

The Redditor wrote:

“The show seems to be deliberately keeping Archie (the main character) at an arm’s distance from the central mystery, which I think is intentional beyond as a means for allowing Bughead to get their sleuth on. I’m not sure why anyone would want to kill Archie, but I think we will come to learn that either his father’s business, his absentee mother, his affair with Ms. Grundy or some yet-to-be-revealed detail put Archie in a position to know something or have access to information without realizing its importance."
