Episode 12 of The CW drama “Riverdale” finally revealed who killed Jason Blossom: his very own father, Clifford Blossom.
But just like every other good TV show, knowing the why is always reserved for the next episode, which in this case, will be the show’s finale episode on May 11.
Recently, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed his reasons to The Hollywood Reporter why out of all the shady characters on “Riverdale,” he chose to zero in on Clifford. He explained, “Sort of around halfway through the season, when we were thinking about the show and what the show was — and the show is on some level a deconstruction of the Archie myth that everything is safe, that everyone is good, that parents protect their children, that fundamentally the world is a good place — it felt like the ultimate subversion to that, the darkest, most taboo thing we could do, is a parent killing a child. Once we landed on that being the point of no return, about halfway through the season, we started to build to Clifford.”
The most obvious reason why Clifford would kill his own child is because he wouldn’t want Jason to reveal the family secrets, especially to his bitter rival, Hiram Lodge. Considering the fact that the Blossoms earlier in the show value their reputation and their business, Jason fathering a child to Polly Cooper, whom everyone now knows is a blood cousin, will not do well with their legacy.
On the other hand, it also could be the fact that the act of killing Jason is a calculated move to keep the family business intact and away from authorities. Screenrant said Clifford’s suicide at the end of the episode had generated more questions about the family’s business, noting the barrel full of drug packages the Blossom patriarch had knocked over when he took his own life.
