Pizza Hut elicited a mostly negative response on social media and in some food publications with its version of the square-shaped Detroit-style pizza.
According to Deadline Detroit, locals say that Pizza Hut's mass-produced pie weakly resembled the cheesy, crusty, deep-dish pizza that has become legendary.
Among the complaints was lack of crispiness, not enough sauce, tastes like cheesy breadsticks, and that it looks like vomit.
According to Detroit-native Chris Powers, who owns a bar, Pizza Hut's product looked like a Detroit pizza with all the cornerstone elements represented, but are a little off. So, the pizza "ends up entirely different."
Following the rise in popularity of Detroit-style pizza, Pizza Hut came up with a square, thick pizza with caramelized crust and cheese.
The pizza has 32 pepperoni slices and one that had gone through 500 iterations in the year it took to develop it.
Pizza Hut's Detroit-style pizza is a limited-time item, making it easy for the food chain to remove it off the menu if the negative feedback begins to impact sales.
